The day started off rainy and cloudy, but ended up being pretty beautiful for the event. All in all it was a lot of fun, and pretty inspiring to see that "Gambaru" spirit from the kids.

This past Saturday, Masami and I walked over to the Aoki Kindergarten, where they were holding their annual sports festival. Some of our students attend Aoki Kindergarten, so we wanted to go show our support. As you can see in the panorama shot above, there were a lot of people there! All kinds of parents and family members cheering like crazy for the kids was a pretty cool sight. I felt like I was at the Kindergarten Olympics. They also had the Rocky theme playing in the background giving it that championship feel. There was also a large photographer team on hand, who essentially played the part of the media. If you look closely you can see some of them on top of the building in the background. :)

私はE.T. Eは、Extra(外)を表し、Tは、Terrestrial(地球の)を意味します。 This past Wednesday we had a wonderful time at our first English movie day (a better name is coming soon...)! We had two sessions, one in the morning for the kids where we watched the Disney movie Big Hero 6, or Baymax, as it is called here in Japan. The evening session was for the adult students, and we watched one of the greatest movies of all time, ET. We provided snacks and drinks, and some of our students brought some homemade treats as well.
As mentioned in our Facebook post earlier this week, both movies are about a young boy who has to overcome great odds with the help of an unlikely friend. A story anyone can relate to, especially if you are trying to learn your second language. It can definitely seem like a daunting task, but sometimes you may find assistance or inspiration in the some unlikely ways. It may not be from an oversized, white, medical robot, or an alien botanist stranded on Earth, but just maybe it could be from a nice little English school in Shonandai with an affinity for singular bridges. We enjoyed watching these movies in English with our students. We made sure we included English and Japanese subtitles to ensure everyone was able to enjoy. Along with the movies, we created the purple booklets you see in the upper left hand corner. The booklets were filled with English phrases and vocabulary that correlated with the movies, and the probable opinions that would come after watching. All of which had Japanese explanation and translations. We will post a Japanese version of this post soon, as it is getting a little late. If you haven't seen Big Hero 6 or E.T. (especially E.T.) we highly recommend it. Below we have an assortment of some of our flash cards, board games, and pie charts that we use for our kids and beginner classes. We use Mr. Printables at http://mrprintables.com/ for a lot of our activities and materials. They have a huge selections of cute and fun kids games and activity materials for free. You just print it out, attach to some card stock, maybe even laminate it if you want, and you have your self some pretty awesome flash cards. Everything should be free, and be sure to show credit where its due, Mr. Printables does an amazing job creating these materials for us. I was going to fluff up some of the pictures to make them look cool, but I decided to not use any filters so that you can see the materials as they are. Anyways have fun! Try new things! Be Adventurous! Be Boundless! Sorry for not posting in a while, it has been pretty busy over here at One Bridge. From Eikaiwa classes to Matsumoto Castle, it has been a crazy couple of weeks! Anyways, we wanted to share with you guys our "London Bridge" class! They are some of the funniest and most talented ladies around. :) They all speak amazing English and are always striving to improve. We asked them what they would do if they were the richest person in Japan, and we got some pretty awesome responses. The responses ranged from care centers, investing, innovation, buying soccer teams, to traveling, and charity. We are always so thrilled to teach these wonderful women and we always learn something new from them. Not to mention they are pretty witty and funny, so the classes are always a lot of fun. Especially with the Olympics coming in 2020, and Japan ramping up it's tourism industry, their goal is to be able to comfortably speak to any English speaking person visiting (or living in) Japan. For the past 8 months we have been teaching them, they are well on their way. |
