One thing we like to do with more experienced Eikaiwa groups, or those who are conversationally, or close to being conversationally fluent, is to pull up news websites on our classroom monitor/TV.
Using just a Macbook, a thunderbolt to HDMI cord, and a TV, we hook everything up and away we go.
We then pull up websites like CNN, Japan Today, BBC, and others like sports websites. CNN and BBC do a good job creating a "live broadcast" feel on their websites, but essentially any legitimate news oriented website should be fine.
We then cycle through the latest big story updates and coverage, with videos and articles, so that there is a wide range of English skills being utilized. They use their listening skills with the broadcasts and videos, their reading skills with the text on the screen and articles, and speaking skills when asking questions and forming opinions. They always learn new useful words very spontaneously so it tends to be very organic and interesting, since it is new as well as NEWS worthy. We tend to stick to the news because everyone will probably already know about it, or will have heard about it at some point before hand, especially the big stories. Therefore, forming an opinion on it, will be a lot easier for them in the long run.
Know your "audience" or class, and pick something appropriate, and you will have yourselves an actually pretty fun and interesting Eikaiwa free-speaking session.
